Ecuador won Honduras by 5-4 in penalty shootout in friendly match


LA CEIBA (AFP) - Ecuador's national team won on the night of Wednesday (9) Honduras by 5-4 in a penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 in 90 minutes in the friendly match, in preparation for the Copa America and Gold Cup, respectively.

The match took place at the Ceibeño Porto de La Ceiba Municipal Stadium, 450 miles north of Tegucigalpa, watched by 15,000 fans and arbitrated by Walter Lopez.

The center of attention in the match was Honduras, Central American Cup champion, and the Ecuador’s coach, the Colombian Reinaldo Rueda, who led Hondruas to last World Cup.

Goals were scored by Jerry Bengston for Honduras at 8 in the first stage, and Pablo Palacios, for Ecuador at 13.

At the end of 90 minutes, there was a penalty shootout which worth the title of the friendly tournament. Each team took six penalties, and Ecuador scored five, while only four by Honduras.

Ecuador prepares to join the Argentina Copa America 2011, who will play in Group B against Brazil, Paraguay and Venezuela. Honduras will play the Gold Cup, in the USA, between 5 and 25 June.
